The SAG1 Toxoplasma gondii surface protein is not required for acute ocular toxoplasmosis in mice.

The SAG1 Toxoplasma gondii surface protein stimulates acute ileitis. To determine whether SAG1 is also important in the eye, wild-type or SAG1 knockout parasites were injected intravitreally into mice. No differences in retinal damage or parasite growth were observed, indicating that unlike the case for the intestine, factors besides SAG1 are important for retinal damage.

Toxoplasma gondii and ocular toxoplasmosis: pathogenesis.

The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that can infect any warm blooded animal,' as well as reptiles and fish,2' and shows a high incidence in humans, with approximately 500 million people throughout the world having antibodies to Tgondii.5 The organism is ubiquitous in nature and produces one of the most common infections ofhumans.' It is the most common cause of...

The temperature-sensitive mutants of Toxoplasma gondii and ocular toxoplasmosis.

The risk of blindness caused by ocular toxoplasmosis supports efforts to improve our understanding for control of this disease. In this study, the involvement of CD8(+), CD4(+), B cell, and IL-10 gene in the immune response of primary ocular infection with the temperature-sensitive mutant (ts-4) of the RH Toxoplasma gondii strain, and in the protective immunity of ocular ts-4 vaccination and ch...

Analysis of Toxoplasma gondii stably transfected with a transmembrane variant of its major surface protein, SAG1.

We have genetically engineered Toxoplasma gondii so that its major surface antigen SAG1 is anchored by a human transmembrane domain (SAG1-TM) instead of its natural GPI anchor (SAG1-GPI) in order to initiate studies to address the function of this protein anchor in parasitic protozoa as well as to get insights into the functional role of SAG1. Our results show that SAG1-TM is correctly folded (...

Recombinant scFv Antibodies against P30 Surface Protein of Toxoplasma Gondii

Background & Aims: Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate, intracellular parasite, which is widely spread in the world. The parasite is able to infect all warm-blooded hosts including humans and farm animals. The infection in humans often occurs after the ingestion of raw or undercooked meat containing tissue cysts. Several methods have been applied to detect this parasite in contaminated foods. Reco...
